Can X-Rays Detect Spinal Tumors? What to Expect

Question
I recently had a serious of x-rays taken to determine back problems, I had my hip and lower back x-rayed as well as a full back x-ray to see if my spine was straight. (it isn't)
Anyway, I wonder, if there was a tumor in my back would the x-rays have showed it?

Answer
Hi Melvin,

Typically, to show up on x-ray, a mass needs to be calcified.  In general, only mineralized tissues are visible.  While most tumors are not calcified, a few are.

Without more information, it really is not possible to say if the etiology of your back problems might be seen on plain film (x-ray).

Best of luck,

Dr. Tim
