QuestionMy husband and I have been trying to conceive for 7 months now and I have been using an ovulation prediction kit for about 4 months. I have irregular periods and was told this type of kit was one of the easiest to use since I am given 20 test strips per kit allowing me to test my urine every day. First of all I've heard that this type of kit may predict ovulation too late and I could be missing my ovulation this whole time by using this method solely. Is that true and is there something else that I can use which is more accurate? My second issue is that this test has given me a positive result for 6 days in a row but I was under the impression that the ovulating window is between 2-3 days. Is this test unreliable? What would cause my LH to surge and remain high? (I'm not taking any medication currently) Is is possible to have an LH surge after conception (during pregnancy)? Thanks for your time and assistance.
AnswerDear Nina,
The LH will rise prior to ovulation. I know you know that , but others may not.
What time of day are you checking? Usually around 2pm is the optimal time. The level may be very high in the morning, but will take about 4 hours to show.
The number of times to test varies. If your cycle is as irregular as you say, you may need up to twenty tests> For example: if your shortest cycle is 28 days and your longest 42, you need to start around day 11 and go up to 20 times. Most women ovulate 12-48 hours after the LH surge is detected, usually about 36 hours.
You have to make sure, for a positive test, that the result line is darker than the control line. You may have a positive line every day, because some have LH every day. If you are testing positive more than three days, you should consult your physician.
No matter what, my prayers and best wishes to you for the results you want!
Sincerely,
Andrea
