Safe Weight Cutting Strategies for Combat Sports Competitors
Questioni am 35. i currently weigh 146 before i go to bed. 3 months ago i decided to start a combat sport that requires a weigh-in. i did a lot of research and found a safe way to cut 10 pounds before a fight with a 24 hour period for between the weigh-in and the match. in a couple of months i will have my first match in an organization that only has a 2 hour recovery period between the weigh-in and the match. the 24 hour plan was based mainly on water weight. from what i understand about a dehydrated body's performance it doesn't sound like i should even think of losing 10 pounds of water weight. How much water weight can i lose without effecting my performance? how do i rehydrate? is there any side affect to using a natural laxitive before a weigh-in? i want to do this realistically and safely. thank you for your time.
AnswerHi Tony,
I apologize about the delay. I was on call for the 3 practices and the hospital ER. Very busy weekend.
This sort of artificial weight manupulation worrys me greatly. You have no idea what 10 pounds of water weight loss can do to you. Laxatives are out of the question.
I would , in the STRONGEST terms, advise you not to rapidly attempt weight changes and then engage in vigorous activity. That can be a lethal combination. Risking your health is not worth it. PLEASE re-think what you are doing.
