Sharp Abdominal Pain After Alcohol Consumption: Causes & When to See a Doctor

Question
Whenever I drink sweeter alcoholic beverages, like margaritas or wine coolers, I get sharp stomach pains within minutes that can last anywhere between 10minutes to a half hour.
They can get so severe where I begin to sweat and it makes me curl over or get on my knees. The pain is medial- under my ribs and above my belly button. Sometimes I end up puking the next day with a little blood.

Could this be an ulcer?

Answer
Dear Andy,

You need to see a gastroenterologist for an endoscopy in order to be properly evaluated for the reason for this pain. An ulcer can be one of the differentials, but other things, as serious, can cause similar symptoms. In the mean time, avoid anything that promotes this pain and subsequent reactions.
