Understanding 4cm Cervical Dilation: What to Expect During Labor

I went to the doctor's on Mon.  They told me I was dilated to 4 cm.  He said I would deliver Tues. or Wed.  My contractions are very irregular, sometimes every 8 mins. apart for a couple of hrs. than nothing.  My question is this, Is it normal for anyone to be at 4 cm. for this long and is there antyhing I can do to speed it up?  Should I be in the hospital?

Hi,
  I can't imagine a doctor in the world that would no admit you at 4 cm.  BUT, since he didn't, consider walking to increase contractions.  Prodromal or long early labor is fairly common, but will become more regular within a few days.
