Emergency Obstetric Techniques: Risks and Procedures
QuestionMy friend had a baby recently it weighed 11 lbs. when the baby's head was out the face was very dark, the Dr. yelled for help and 3 nurses rushed in and pushed on the mothers stomach, in a shoving style, similar to resuscitating someone not breathing... now the baby has a liver problem, and has not moved its right shoulder, for one week. Is this a normal procedure?
AnswerAs I do not know what was ailing the baby at the time, it is hard for me to say if these is standard procedure for that or not. However, I have attended a birth before where the nurses shoved on the stomach. That procedure is used to help get the baby out quickly during a vaginal birth. Generally the most it causes is bruising on the mother and perineal tears if the mother is already in the pushing stage of labor. The problems the baby is currently experiencing do not sound like it came from that but from an underlying issue. Without knowing anything else about the issue, it's impossible to guess what happened except that the baby was in distress and they tried to go ahead and get the baby out quickly using that method.
Please let me know if I can help you further or with anything else.
Best wishes,
Helen =)
