Newborn Hematuria: Causes, Symptoms & When to Worry

A relatives newborn baby has slight bleeding in the urine, this wes noticed during his second day after he was born?
Is this normal for a male baby?

My first question would be, are you sure this is blood?  It is fairly normal to see some pink in the diapers during the first few days of life.  This is caused by some dehydration in the infant, resulting in a brick or pink crystalization in the urine.  It is usually self-resolving, going away once the mother's milk comes in and the baby gets more fluids.

My second question would be, is this boy circumcised?  If so, this may be some residual bleeding from the circumcision, and again would be nothing to be worried about unless it continues or gets worse.

If neither of these seems to be the cause, be sure to bring it up to the baby's doctor at the next well visit.  It is not considered an emergency unless the bleeding is excessive or the child appears to be in pain.
