Understanding Childbirth: Natural Labor, Medical Interventions & Hospital Stay

Question
dear Elayne,I just wanted to know types of labor, natural and medication intervention, also what is the best,i wanted to know also what to take in the hospital for you and your baby and how long is the hospital stay...and thanks in advance.

Answer
The best, ideal labor is always the one that begins naturally, without induction, and is allowed to progress without interference or limits of any kind.  In the absence of immediate medical concerns for the fetus or the mother, labor that is allowed to progress physiologically and unhindered will be easier on the mother and the baby, and will result in a better experience overall.  Virtually every procedure that is done to a mother in a hospital environment will have an impact on the labor, even though that impact may not be immediately obvious.  Again, in the absence of medical indications, staying out of the hospital and working with a midwife instead is probably the best idea.

If you do go to the hospital, you will want to bring labor tools with you, such as music, massage tools, comfort items, rice packs, and even your own birth ball if you have one.  Don't forget a camera!  After delivery, you will want comfortable loungewear/sleepwear, clothing for the baby, toiletries, and going home clothes for you (look for something that was comfortable when you were about 5 months pregnant).

Hospital stays after uncomplicated vaginal deliveries can be as short as 24 hours.  Longer stays are recommended if you have had complications, if you or your baby is suspected to be ill, or if you have a c-section, up to 5 days.
