Complex Paternity Situation: Multiple Potential Fathers - Seeking Guidance
QuestionHi. 4 years ago, my husband slept with a female and a week later she told him she was pregnant. The affair took place around July 23.He found out from her friends that she had been with another guy prior to that and may have been pregnant already. We decided to wait and see the baby. When she took an ultrasound on Sept. 16, it dated her as being 2 months and 2 1/2 weeks. She told him that the ultrasound was wrong and according to the clinic, she was only six weeks. The ultrasound gave a due date for the baby in early-mid April and the baby was born in mid April. She told him the baby was premature. The child does not favor him or her. She also got married to first child's father before the baby was born and he told my husband that the baby was his. That is until she got pregnant a third time by his cousin and he took a DNA test proving the baby was not his. Now, 4 years after they told my husband to back off when we tried to pursue the matter, she is coming at him saying it is his child. The other guy has now left her and she is pregnant again and trying to get assistance. My husband was not denying anything but the dates do not add up at all. Who gives more accurate dates, the clinic or the ultrasound? How did she know she was pregnant one week after and she told me that she was craving and everything a week after she told my husband. We are not trying to get out of taking care of the child but want to know a few answers. We plan to get a paternity test but in the mean time, wanted to see if he is anywhere near accurate.
Thank you,
Daphne
AnswerIt sounds very likely that this woman has pinned her hopes on getting your husband to claim the baby, so that she can get better financial support. An ultrasound at 2.5 months (probably around 10 weeks) is pretty accurate, to within a week. It certainly would not be a full month off, not that early. She may claim the clinic gave her a different date, but she could also have given the clinic a false LMP date, too.
I would definitely get the paternity test. Until then, it's just your husband's word against hers, and unfortunately courts tend to take the mother's side in paternity cases without evidence to the contrary.
Good luck!
