Understanding Precancerous Cells After Lumpectomy: Treatment Options

When they did the lumpectomy the pathologist report came back with precancerous cells around the inside of the nipple.  The doctor is recommending a mastectomy.  Is this absolutley necessary or are there other methods of treatment.
