Birth Control Pills & Antibiotics: Understanding Interactions & Effectiveness
QuestionI am on the birth control pill and since Saturday am taking antibiotics that my doctor told me would interfere with the pill. He told me that my pill would not be effective "for the rest of this month". I was not sure if he really meant for the whole rest of April, or just the rest of the 28-day package I am on. Just today I took the last of my "actual" pills, and tomorrow I will be starting my 7 "sugar pills". I will take my last dose of antibiotics tomorrow night.
Could you help me clear up my confusion in making sure when exactly my pill will be effective again? Thanks
AnswerHi Daniela.
My opinion would be, since you are starting your sugar pills and taking the last dose of antibiotics, all within 24 hours, that your next pack would be unaffected. From my expierience, I never had a problem with the month following antibiotic treatment. And it will be a week until the new pack starts, so I think you'l have full protection when your new pack starts. But to be certain, call you Doc and ask him. Some antibiotics stay in your system longer than others, so it may be a good idea to double check with him.
