Unexpected Bleeding After Stopping Birth Control & Unprotected Sex: What Should You Do?

Question
Hi,
I started my period on sunday, November 16th. I started taking yaz on this day. I am also on seizure medicine and the two together were really messing with my body. It made me feel weird. I quit taking the birth control after only 4 days of being on it. I went on vacation on November 25-30 and had unprotected sex during this time. No pull out method either. I started bleeding very lightly so I took 2 birth control pills on the 25th and it stopped. However, on the 30th I started bleeding again and it is fluctuating. One minute its just light bleeding the next its very heavy passing clots. Is this normal due to me starting and stopping birth control so soon?? Or is this possibly an early period?? I'm not suppose to get my period until December 14th. Can I still get pregnant if I am experiencing this type of bleeding?? Thank you so much!!

Answer
Hi Amber,
Irregular bleeding may be related to starting and stopping the pill.  Usually this wouldn't be heavy.  If you weren't taking the pill prior to Nov. 16, then it may be related to some buildup of the uterine lining prior to that time.  It is still possible to get pregnant even though you're having bleeding.  You're probably aware that many seizure medications cause birth control pills to break down sooner resulting in lower hormone levels and less effectiveness.
