Follow‑up Inquiry: Managing Missed Contraceptive Dose While Traveling

Question
Hello Mia,

I asked a question to Norman last night and he did respond, however, I need to ask a follow-up and he is not available. Here is m copy from yesterday:

Hello,

I am very bothered about a mess up from last week. I currently live overseas and was in the states last week. I took Trinessa pill on Tuesday morning at 7:30-ish am east coast time, forgot my Wednesday pill since I was in the air, had unprotected sex with my husband what might be night time east coast time, and remembered to take my pill on Thursday morning around 3:30-ish am east coast time (maybe add a couple of hours). I took two of them. I missed one pill in the third week (active pill) when this occurred. Because of the time zone switches I am not too sure how much time has lapsed from taking the pill and remembering to take the pill. What really bothers me is that I tried to get help when I realized my mistake but the call center for my health care would not send a message to my doctor and women's health would not return my calls. My immediate concern is, could I have gotten pregnant as a result? Would I expect to see my period due tomorrow or Wednesday morning? Please help! I would appreciate some guidance! Thanks.

Norman's response was that I might have gotten pregnant but is not likely. He said to wait until I get my period. It is due today or tomorrow. How long should I give myself before I need to take a test? My period usually ends on a Saturday or Sunday. Will it even come since I missed an active pill? Thank you so much for your service!!!

Sincerely,

Julie

Answer
Hi Julie,

If I am understanding correctly, you missed one pill which you made up by taking 2 pills when you remembered. Based on the times you give it sounds to me that only Wednesday's pill was missed (and then taken on Thursday). The chances that you will become pregnant because of this is very unlikely.

There is some chance that your period will be off by a day or so, or maybe not arrive, due to the missed pill. Women sometimes miss a period on the pill even when they take them correctly. I recommend you give yourself a few more days to see if it arrives. If it does not, take a pregnancy test to be sure. If it is negative and you still don't get your period, I recommend waiting another week and then retaking the test if you are concerned. If it has not been 14 days since you had sex (it sounds like this might be the case) then wait at least 14 days from the day of sex to retake the test.

I hope this helps. If you have further questions let me know.
