Birth Control Pill Initiation: Timing and Period Irregularities

Question
Hello,

I got birth control pills for the first time from a local planned parenthood. They never asked if my period was normal, but instructed me to start taking them on the sunday after starting my period. My period comes at random times, from every month to every 5 months or so. I was wondering if I can start them any other time? I'd like to start them as soon as possible but may not get my period for another 5 months... Thanks in advance for taking time to read this!

Answer
Hello Hailey,
As long as you're sure you're not pregnant, I would just take 1 pill daily for 5 days to bring on a period.  When the period starts, begin a new pack on the first Sunday from when your period starts.  You'll be protected after you've been on the new pack for 7 days.  Save the rest of the partly used pack for possible extras in the future.  Usually your period will come a couple days after you finish the 5 pills,  In case you've ovulated recently, it may take a little longer.  Wait for the period to come before starting the new pack.  Best wishes.
