Question13 months ago I went off the Pill (which i had been on for 9 years). I was tired of taking it and my partner and I were talking about starting a family soon. So I thought get these hormones out of my body before we REALLY start trying and he agreed.
Problem is I have not gotten a period since. I am 26 years old and otherwise completely healthy individual. I do not smoke or drink excessively or do drugs of any kind. I am active and go to the gym but and not obsessive when it comes to that either. (doc already ruled out body weight and no period)I just like to live a healthy life.
I have been to my family DOC several times about this and have even been referred to a specialist. Every test they ran came back find except that some of my hormones were "imbalance" so the specialist told me that I had Polycystic Ovarian Disorder.
Great!!! At least I know whats going on and we can deal with it.... started looking into it and Im not 100% convinced that is whats going on as I possess non of the symptoms of POC and seeing as there is no YES OR NO test for POC (its stated according to what my doc said my hormone levels looked like), and IM wondering if something else could be the reason.
I have since called to have a second opinion (even if POC is the result of this, at least by 2 docs I would feel better) but I would also like to have a more knowledge on what could possible be causing this before I talk to the second specialist???
Any imput would be greatly appreciated as I dont even know where to go from here!
AnswerHi Stephanie,
Having no period for 13 months probably means that you haven't ovulated for 13 months, so that's your basic problem. It can be confirmed by having you take progesterone pills for 7-10 days. If you get a period after stopping, then the problem is not ovulating. Not ovulating may be because of POCS or may be genetic, but it probably doesn't make too much difference. If you were over or under weight, getting to a normal weight would likely help, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Assuming a fairly normal weight, when you want to get pregnant, your doctor can prescribe Clomid pills to take each month to induce ovulation. Most likely that will cause you to ovulate, and then you'll be able to get pregnant. In the meantime, it would be best to take progesterone pills every 2 months or so to prevent the uterine lining from building up excessively. Best wishes.
