QuestionHi Lisa,
My girlfriend is five days late, and we're worried that she's pregnant. She's 17 and we both decided we're not ready for this type of commitment. The thing is that her mother doesn't even know that she has had sexual intercourse at all, so we want to keep it a secret. Now I'm not sure what are the laws, and right now I'm just looking for information, if you do have anything, please tell me. The things I'm looking for at this point, is; What is the age you must be to have an abortion without parental consent? What is the average cost? Where can we go to get an abortion? All these questions should apply to NYC laws. If you can help me, I would appreciate it.
Thanks a bunch
Anthony
AnswerHi there Anthony,
Thanks for the question. Laws regarding parental conscent or notification vary from state to state. A minor is only required to inform her parents of her decision to have an abortion if she lives in a state with a parental conscent or notification law.
New York has no such law, so your girlfriend would not require parental conscent to obtain an abortion.
Fees vary depending on the stage of pregnancy. Costs at clinics range from $250-400 for abortions in the first trimester. Costs at hospitals will be higher depending on how long the woman stays and what anesthetics are used. There may be additional charges if extra tests or medications are required.
Teens are often able to get financial help for abortion services. Some health centers, clinics, or hospitals offer sliding scale fees- according to income. Some may also reduce the cost for young people. Sometimes Medicaid will cover the cost.
To find out more information call your local Planned Parenthood center. Dial 1-800-230-PLAN to be put in touch with the center nearest you.
