Post-Abortion Pill Care: Addressing Potential Infections & Concerns

Question
I had the 2 dose abortion pill at about 8 weeks pregnant over a year ago. It worked fine and I experienced all that I as told I would. I went to the 2 week after follow up appointment and mentioned I had an unusual smell, she said I may have an infection and gave me two types of tablets to take, I think one was antibiotics but I'm not sure. A couple of months later I noticed that unusual smell was back, I have suffered in the past from bacterial vaginosis, so I got the Dalacin/clyndamycin cream and it seemed to go, about a week later it was back so I have tried some herbal remedies to try and get rid of it, but it still smells weird, kind of a strong urine smell, that's worse when I'm hot. I'm out of my home country for another month and I'm not really sure what to do, I have just finished a course of Flagyl 400mg tablets, but they don't seem to have helped either. I wondered if this is common or if you have any remedy suggestions or ideas as to what it sounds like. Thank you very much.

Answer
Dear Lisa,
What you are describing could be bacterial vaginosis, however this should have responded to the Flagyl. Make sure you have taken the correct dose - one tablet twice a day for a full seven days.  You should probably get an examination.  The good news is that a foul smell is usually not anything bad, or something you need to get checked immediately.  You can wait until you get home to see a doctor.
I hope this is helpful,
Doctor Joan
