Post-Abortion Heavy Bleeding: Causes, When to Worry & What to Do

Question
QUESTION: Hi,

I underwent an abortion ( MTP) on the 21st October and the doctor has told me that she cleaned everything...No bleeding occured for the first one week, then the bleeding started...it started becoming more and more over the days and then continued till 2 weeks thats when I approached another doctor ( bcoz I moved from India to Sweden)...The doctor has checked and told that its normal and the bleeding could continue between 3 to 4 weeks...On the third week, it started coming down and I was thinking it would over soon...But, all of a sudden from yesterday the bleeding went un controllable and with lots of clots in it...this morning I visited the clinic, they checked, did the ultra and foudn nothing wrong...the doctor prescribed a tablet to control bleeding to be taken 3 times a day for 4 days ( Kryst 500 mg)...Now the blweedign is still continuing with lots fo clots....I am worried...
Can anyone suggest me whats going on and what can be done

ANSWER: Hi, jayashee,

This excessive bleeding is so common after MTP! It's also not good for you, and I don't blame you for being concerned.

Try eating some very spicy food with cayenne in it. Let me know if this helps.

This type of abortion uses powerful hormones to accomplish an abortion, and these destroy the delicate balance of your own hormones. And since this was done in India, and I haven't heard good things about the doctors in some areas, who knows what they gave you and how appropriate it was! If you haven't experienced any cramping or contractions, please know you should have.

The doctor should check your hormones.

It's possible you will need further treatment. They may want to do a D&C. If the bleeding isn't under control, they may want to remove your uterus. But if it continues like that, you should ask them to admit you to the hospital. I hope you can bring this under control. You can't go on like this.

I will pray for you.

QUESTION: Thank you very much for the valued answer..!
From last night, I started passing more and more clots...
Yesterday, when I visited the doctor here in Sweden, she did the ultra sound completely through inner parts and re confirmed that there is absolutely no infection...

Answer
Hi, jayashree,

I wasn't worried about infection. I am concerned mainly at this point about your hormones being unbalanced so that they don't stop the bleeding when they should. The doctor should test your hormones. Also, it may be that there are parts of the uterine lining that are sloughing off. Are you experiencing any cramping? Under the circumstances, you probably should be. Also, have you experienced any fever? I hope this gives you some additional questions to ask your doctor.

One other thing. If you can, eat some spicy food with cayenne in it, or take some cayenne in a capsule. This may help.

You're welcome. Take care.
