Mifepristone Abortion Without Misoprostol: Monitoring & Observations
QuestionI am forty years old and became pregnant while on contraception. My daughter who is four was born with a imperforate anus. Being high risk, I decided to abort this pregnancy. I took a dose of mifepristone on Saturday late afternoon and have not yet followed up with te misoprostol. I started cramping within one hour and passed the yolk sac which was intact (oval and no tearing and many blood clots). All within four hours. I have some medical training and believe that there is not much else to pass. I was going to take the mass to my doctor to send out for a pathology report. I am concerned about the unnecessary side effects of the misoprostol and do not wish to take it if my body has already done an adequate job of expulsion. I am continuing the antibiotics. Do you feel this is harmful (not taking the misoprostol)if I wait two more days to see my doctor. Thank you for your time and prompt consideration of my question.
Kind regards,
Angela
AnswerHi Angela,
As long as there is no longer any tissue left inside your uterus then misoprostol is not needed. Usually this is a two step method, misoprostol causes the uterus to contract. At your follow up your doctor will be able to tell if all the tissue has gone. Good luck!
