Post-Abortion Discharge & Bleeding: What to Expect & When to Worry

Question
Hello Shan,
I had a surgical abortion one week ago and was only 5-6 weeks pregnant at the time. The bleeding was very light and only lasted 2 days. The last few days I've had a decent amount of clear, discharge occurring. Definitely more than usual. It does not smell foul to me, more like the usual "womanly" scent. The odd thing is I've started to bleed very, very lightly again but it's bright red (fresh blood?) and usually only shows up on the toilet paper and occasionally on my underwear. I almost feel like a slight burning sensation when I have to pee, but it doesn't burn when I actually pee.
I've followed the doctors instructions (no sex, baths etc) the only that I've done that could be considered questionable is masturbate via clitoral stimulation.
Hopefully you can help me out.
Thank you very much!

Answer
Hi Ashley,
the uterus is a selfcleaning organ and the little red discharge is a sign of that.
No worry. It will stop soon.
Masturbation has no influence on this proces.
Do not use tampons before you got your normal periods again.
This - by the way - can take ac onsiderable time.
A little patience is all you need.
Hope this answers your question.
CiaO,
Dr Shan
