Pregnancy Risk After Unprotected Sex & Options: A Doctor's Answer

Question
QUESTION: Dear Dr. Shan,

I am 21 years old.  Last week (about 10 days ago)I had unprotected sex with my boyfriend and he ejaculated in me.  The day we had sex though, I believe it was the first day of my normal period cycle (there were bloody spots on my pad, not a lot, but there was some).  After we had sex though, I took the "Morning After/Plan B" pills 7 hours later (followed all instructions). What are the chances of my being pregnant?  What can I do to find out if I am pregnant in such short notice?  If I am pregnant, what is your recommended procedure for abortion because I can not have a child now.  Earlier the better, right?  Please help!  Thank you.

ANSWER: Hi Eugenia,
The chance that you are pregnant is almost nil. Plan B is OK.
But nature has strange tricks, and not all women are the same (thank heaven !)
So do a pregtest asap. They are very sensitive, and reliable after a few days of pregnancy allready.
For recommendations on abortions see: http://www.prochoice.org/Pregnant/index.html

bests,

QUESTION: Thank you so much for the fast reply Dr. Shan! How do I get a pregtest?  I am not sure because I never had any experience with this, do I just buy it at the local pharmacy? And they can detect pregnancy after only 10 days?  Should I go to a local hospital to do this?  Do you know any doctors in Taiwan to recommend me to just in case everything goes awry? Also, I live in Taipei, and I see you worked in Taiwan before, which is why I am asking.  Thank you!

Answer
亲爱的 Eugenia,
I left Taipei before you were born. You are smart enough to do this test yourself. Local pharmacy's have them.
There is always a little manual enclosed to explain how it works. No problem.
If you do not trust yourself better go to the outpatient department of the Universityclinic ("Taida" hospital)
Do not worry. Everything will be allright. Just take care of yourself.
再见,
