Understanding Recovery After Abortion Pill Use: A Personal Account

Question
"I'm probably one of the few guys on here but I am a little concerned about my fiancee.  Firstly we are both in London, UK (just to let you know!) .She took the morning after pill within 12 hours of us having "an accident".  Any way, two weeks later she took a pregnancy test as she was three days late and we were both utterly shocked when the result was positive.  We made the difficult decision to have a medical abortion.

On tuesday 22nd June 2011 she took the first of the five abortion pills.  We returned on the 23rd and she took the remaining four oraly between her teeth and gums and then swallowed the remainder,  For about three hours she felt nothing and had no bleeding.  Then at around 1830 it was like a light switch had turned on.  She was in extreme pain.  Even though we knew what was to be expected she was in absolute agony (and she's normally a pretty tough girl!).  The pain lasted for nearly two hours.  I was so concerned I nearly called an ambulance.  But the pain subsided.  Since then, she has still had pretty heavy bleeding with clots etc and is still experiencing cramps every now and then.  Yesterday (three days later) she was still bleeding and had occasional cramps.  We contacted the clinic who said this was fine and to be expected in some girls.  And to call them again if bleeding and cramps still persist after a week.

I really wanted a second opinion as to whether this is normal and to be expected.  I told my fiancee that things will get better with everyday that passes.  I am also concerned at her emotional state as she is very very down and sad and breaks down in tears quite regulary (hormones at work?)

Are you able to advise when things are likely to get back to normal or is it a near impossible question?  We are off to Las Vegas and the Caribbean on July 06th and i'm praying she'll be back to relative normality by then.

Should we be concerned at anything here???

Thanks very much for reading this!!!"

Answer
Dear Chris,

I'm not sure if you have emailed me also and that I answered by email. If not, please forgive me as I just not got your question. I hope everything is ok as you were supposed to be going on a trip yesterday, according to your question.

I wish I could have talked to you before she took the pills as I don't recommend medical abortion at all. I hope the bleeding and cramps have passed. I have been getting questions and stories from some women about extended and extended bleeding and other side effects. So please let me know what has happened. You can email me at CHERYL51@aol.com if you want to talk by private email.
