Pregnancy After Abortion: Understanding Risks & Options

Question
2 weeks ago in June 4th I had a surgical abortion. For those weeks I was bleeding very lightly and had little or no cramps and I was fine. 2 days ago in June 18th I went to a follow up appointment and the oby/gyn doctor said that the procedure went well and I was good. He gave me a free gift sample of birth control pills and prescribe me the pills. And he also told me to start taking it this Sunday the 24th of June. Yesterday I had unprotected sex with my bf (stupid me) and we used the pull out method.. :( I was wondering what are the chances of me getting pregnant again? Also yesterday I started bloating like when I was pregnant before and I still am bloating today. Could it still be that the Hcg hormones are still in my body? How long will it remain in my body? Thanks

Answer
Hello, Annie,

You're welcome.

As you are probably aware, pulling out doesn't work. All it takes is one drop, and it is common for a man to give off one drop beforehand. It is unlikely you are fertile yet, but not impossible.

If you only had sex yesterday, you wouldn't be bloating up due to a new pregnancy today. You probably still do have hormones in your body from your pregnancy. It sometimes takes weeks for the hormones to dissipate. You won't have a period until they do, unless you do take birth control pills. However, the abortion itself, and the birth control pills, will both make you much more vulnerable to sexually transmitted disease. If your boyfriend has ever slept with anyone else, even if he hasn't told you, you are vulnerable. Don't count on "protection". It doesn't work. At least you know you weren't protected this time. But condoms don't protect a woman either from pregnancy or from STDs. They fail sooner or later. You deserve to be free of the fear of pregnancy.

Birth control pills also come with a slew of side effects and complications. They can also cause serious harm or kill you. As long as you are not having sex, you won't need them. Taking that kind of a risk with your life is not wise for the sake of some momentary pleasure periodically. You deserve a man who will cherish and protect you. If he isn't willing to respect your body, then you deserve someone who will. Both abortion and birth control pills can make you much more vulnerable to triple negative breast cancer. This cancer is very difficult to treat, and kills 1/4 of its victims. After abortion, it strikes before a woman is 40, sometimes much earlier. I recommend you take Vitamin D3 for the rest of your life, as well as astaxanthin. A dose of 5000IU is a good dose. You should have your blood checked periodically, because it is possible to overdose. Ideally, your blood should have around 75-100ng/ml of Vitamin D. If it has more than 100, cut back on the dose. If it's significantly under 75, increase to 6000IU a day.

If it does turn out you are pregnant, please do not have another abortion. Abortion can kill or seriously harm you. The damage from your surgical abortion that you have already had could also hurt your future children, so it is critically important that if you do become pregnant, you tell your doctor about your abortion so that he can provide treatment to help protect your baby.

You can test for pregnancy in three weeks, and then a week later. If the first test shows positive, then the second test should be either weaker or stronger. If stronger, then it is probably a new pregnancy. If weaker, probably not.

If you have any questions, it is best to ask a doctor. Don't go to the one who did the surgical abortion. He won't want to admit he harmed you in any way.

Please take care of yourself. You deserve better than abortion. Please let me know how you do, and feel free to ask any other questions you might have.
