QuestionI was wondering what some self care suggestions would be for a client with edema? Or if I should just tell them to consult with their doctor.
Thank you
Suzzette
AnswerThanks for your inquiry, Suzzette.
When we consider edema as a condition to "treat", it is really one that you really need to know more about the client's individual case.
For those with edema in their leg, ankle and foot, simple at-home care might include:
Elevate legs above your heart while lying down.
Exercise your legs. This helps pump fluid from your legs back to your heart.
Wear support stockings (sold at most drug and medical supply stores).
Try to follow a low-salt diet, which may reduce fluid retention and swelling.
However, if you are NOT familiar with the client's history, I recommend you refer them to consult with their attending physician for suggestions, especially if client is suffering from Pulmonary Edema, http://www.hmc.psu.edu/healthinfo/pq/pulmonaryedema.htm .
I hope that provides you with the guidance you were seeking.
