Massage and Shingles: Safety Considerations & Guidelines

Question
Can I give a massage to someone who has shingles (they have been on meds for 7 days)

Answer
Hi Julie -

Shingles (Herpes Zoster) for one, is highly painful so you would not want to be putting any pressure on the sores and the client wouldn't want you to either! ;)  Second, its very contagious and the last thing you want is to contract it yourself! :)  Since you know the client has seen a doctor you can get them to have their doctor sign a release to work on them when they think it is safe to.

Essentiallly you do not want to massage on any infected or inflammed area, regardless of how long they have been on meds.  If you have any doubt at all - don't.

That said - Shingles are only a local contraindication.  You can give them massage elsewhere on the body, but be careful that you observe proper precautions with sheets, cleaning your table and washing your hands!

Best Wishes,
Mikey
