Post-Massage Rash & Flu: Potential Connection & What to Do

Question
Hi,
I am having physical therapy on my right arm for an elbow injury I sustained
over 2 years ago.  The therapist does some very deep tissue massage and
stretching before my exercises.  Last week after my therapy, my arm broke
out in an itchy rash (I've now had it for 6 days) and i came down with the flu
that night.  very sudden onset.  Would it be fair to assume the massage
therapy released toxins/viruses into my system which provoked the
symptoms I describe? should I hold off on my therapy for a while or just keep
going? I'm a little reluctant because I don't want to get sick again. thanks.

Answer
Hi Karen,

The rash could have been from the oil or lotion your therapist was using as for the flu im not really sure how that would connect. If the therapist was sick and never stayed home, unclean linens or not washing their hands before and after each treatment, or you could have been coming down with somthing and it might not have hit until then. If you have changed your laundry detergent or the therapist has then that could have played a factor as well.  Its kind of hard to pin point. If the rash hasn't gone away by day 10 the see your doctor. I wouldn't go to therapy until this is taken care of and if you're still experiencing the flu its not good for your body to be going through therapy at the same time. I hope this helps and good luck.
