Protecting Nails from Aquarium Water: A Guide for Pet Store Workers

Question
I work in a pet store and have my hands in the fish aquariums quite often.  The aquarium water is making my nails soft causing them to peel.  What can I do to protect my nails?  Gloves don't seem to be an option since my employer never has any.

Answer
I know this will be difficult to work into your routine, but get in the habit of drying your hands thoroughly everytime you have them in the water. Make sure you take off all rings to dry completely underneath them and in between your fingers. And use lotion after you dry your hands. This may require some research, since you'll want to find one that won't come off in water and won't harm the fish. At the end of the day, try rubbing your hands with olive oil (it absorbs into your skin very efficiently and won't leave you greasy) to help get moisture back into your skin.
