Sunscreen Expiration: How Long is it Effective?

Question
How long is a tube or aerosal can of sunblock effective?
How many months/years after it is purchased?

Answer
Dear Mary,

Typically 2-3 years after the manufacture date.  Often this date is listed on the bottom of or side of the can. Some are even effective after 4-5 years.  I would suggest testing the effectiveness of sunblock or sunscreen by using it on an arm or leg along with a newly purchased product on the rest of your body.  If you don't burn or even tan on the part of your body where you used the older product, you know it's still effective.  I suggest an arm or leg for this test since the skin on these areas of the body is less vulnerable than the skin on your neck area, shoulders, face and tops of feet.

Best of luck,
