Answer
Dear Rose,

While I don't know from personal experience if any of the following remedies work. Here are several home made remedies that have been recommended for lightening skin tone.

People want to whiten their skin for many reasons. Usually it is a way to reduce or remove scars, dark spots or discolorations. Others just want a brighter and more even skin tone or want to remove a tan. Skin whiteners are also called skin bleachers and skin lighteners. The skin can repair itself, but sometimes home remedies are needed to get the skin looking its best. Natural and inexpensive treatments are available to help whiten areas of the skin. Dramatic changes are not possible with home remedies, but some improvement in skin tone does occur with continued use of treatments.

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice has a mild bleaching action. It contains citric acid, which can lighten small areas by sloughing off the top layer of the epidermis. Bottled lemon juice is a good source for the juice, but you can also squeeze the juice out of fresh lemons. Apply the juice a few times a day.

Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is a well-known bleaching substance with many applications. It is used in beauty products like hair dyes and teeth whiteners. Hydrogen peroxide is also used to bleach paper, among other industrial uses. While hydrogen peroxide has a strength of up to 35 percent, only 3 to 4 percent solutions are available for personal or home use.

Buttermilk and Milk

Using buttermilk and milk is a popular folk remedy. The lactic acid in these products is a natural acid that exfoliates the epidermis. As new skin appears, the darkened areas are less noticeable.

Orange Peels

It is suggested that you cut orange peels and let them dry in the sun. When the peels are dry, grind them up to make a powder. Add milk to form a paste. Apply to the skin areas you want to whiten every day.

Tomato Juice and Lime Juice

A paste made of tomatoes and lime juice also helps to lighten skin and fade tans. You can squeeze the juice out of fresh tomatoes or buy tomato juice. Add a few drops of lime juice and apply the mixture to the face. Leave on for 15 to 20 minutes and then wash off.

Mint Leaves

Grind up mint leaves to make a powder. Add water to make a paste and apply to skin. Leave on for 20 minutes before washing off.

Almonds and Milk

Let 4 almonds soak in water overnight. The next day, grind up all the almonds to form a powder. Add milk to form a paste. Apply to skin. Leave on overnight and wash off with water in the morning. Do this for 15 days in a row.

Best of luck, Rose.
