Dealing with Dry, Coarse Gray Hair: Aveda & Cost-Effective Solutions

Question
Dear Linda,

My question is about dry coarse gray colored hair (my hair color red).  I have always used Aveda Products but now that I am getting grayer the products do not work the way they use to, they are really expensive and the color only lasts a month.  To get my hair colored and cut it is about $125.00 and right now I am out of a job so it is hard to maintain.

To get my hair to even settle down I have to use about 3 types of Aveda products before it does anything to look natural.  I have tried John Frieda but after a short time I get sores on my scalp.

Can you suggest any shampoo and conditioner, coloring, oil treatment anything that may help? Will be waiting to hear from you.

Thank you,
Linda

Answer
Dear Linda~

I'm not clear what your question is, but I'll assume you want a better color-safe shampoo?  And you want products to help your hair "settle down"?  I'n not sure what you mean by settle down....is it frizzy?  I will go on assumption that it is....

Here's my Rx for your hair...

1) Shampoo with a sulfate-free shampoo such as Moroccanoil Moisture Shampoo (and use the Moisture Conditioner) or L'Oreal Evercreme Moisture shampoo (and condition).
2) Use a deep conditioner (both of the above lines have one) once a week.
3) Wear caps, hats and scarves while in the sun to minimize the fading of your color.
4) Rub a few drops of Moroccanoil or Pureology Precious Oil through your hair before styling.  It will add shine and help your hair settle down.  (as will the deep conditioning once weekly---maybe even twice weekly, depending on how dry your hair is)

Best wishes, Linda!
