QuestionMy stylist died my hair an ash blonde color, it was dark brown before. I'm pretty sure she just used bleach and toner, no color. She told me to use a toning shampoo to keep brassy tones out of my hair, but will the bleached hair eventually start to "fade" or turn orange too? Do I need to go back every once in a while to get it re-bleached?

Once hair is bleached and toned to a blonde, it cannot "fade" to an orange. if this is happening, it is usually the result of a buildup of minerals on the blonde hair, making it look brassy or even orange in some cases. The culprit is usually iron in the water and the orange is the iron deposits on the hair oxidizing and actually turning to rust. A good way to determine this is to look at your sink or tub drain to see is your water causes a rust looking spot that always needs to be cleaned away. It's the same thins depositing on your hair. You just don't see it on dark hair. Also, the blonde hair is more porous, so it attaches more readily.
Using a clarifying or chelating shampoo regularly will remove this and keep it from building up again. The first time lather and rinse, the reapply and leave on for 10-15 minutes before rinsing. This should help remove it. If not, repeat a day or two later. After this use a clarifying or chelating shampoo in the normal way every third shampoo or so to maintain.
Your hair should usually not have to be re-bleached other than retouching the new growth.
