Will Dark Auburn Hair Dye Affect Caramel Highlights?

I originally had caramel highlights in my medium brown hair but when the roots started comming in I decided to dye it a dark auburn.  It was dyed at a beauty school,  I am guessing they used permanent hair color. The auburn color has pretty much faded by now.  My question is,  I would like to go back to caramel highlights and I didn't know if dying my hair auburn previously would effect the color of the caramel highlights.  Thank you in advance!

Would you mind sending in a picture of your faded auburn or you could find a picture on the internet thats the closest to the shade? Thanks. And yeah, most beauty schools dye with permanent hair color.
But if you want the answer now, um i would say that if the auburn is faded JUST enough then it wont effect the caramel highlights.
