* Merrylegs: Merrylegs, the kind and gentle pony who served as a companion to the younger horses at Birtwick Park, is eventually given away to a clergyman's family, where he is to serve as a children's pony. The intention is for him to have a happy and easy life, suitable for his age and temperament.
* Black Beauty: Black Beauty endures many hardships throughout the book. He passes through the hands of several owners, some of whom are kind and considerate, while others are cruel and neglectful. He suffers from overwork, poor treatment, and accidents. However, towards the end of the story, he finds a kind and caring owner who appreciates him for his good qualities and allows him to live out his days in peace and comfort.
Essentially, while Merrylegs finds a comfortable and pleasant home relatively early in the story, Black Beauty's journey is much more turbulent before he eventually finds a similarly happy ending.
