Safety Referrals in Beauty Salons: Chemical Exposure & Infectious Diseases

Two hazards that may need to be referred in a beauty salon are:

1. Chemical Exposure/Allergic Reactions: Beauty salons use a wide range of chemicals in hair dyes, perms, acrylic nails, and cleaning products. If a client or employee experiences a severe allergic reaction (e.g., difficulty breathing, hives spreading rapidly) or suffers a significant chemical burn, referral to a medical professional (doctor, hospital) is necessary.

2. Infectious Diseases/Conditions: While salons take precautions, there's a risk of spreading infections like fungal infections (e.g., athlete's foot, ringworm), bacterial infections (e.g., impetigo), or viral infections (e.g., warts). If a client presents with a suspicious skin condition that appears infectious or if an employee develops an infection they suspect they contracted at work, referral to a doctor or dermatologist is crucial to prevent further spread and ensure proper treatment.
