Answer
Hi nasibcjgreen, thanks for writing to me.

I'll start with your eyes if I may.  When I wish to have the smoky eye look, I tend to use layers of colors and smudge them together.

I'd start with a good base eye shadow, a lighter ivory perhaps; this highlights the upper eye-lid and provides a good base.

Then, using your chosen eye-shadow and perhaps 1 or even 2 others, all of similar shades, gradually build up, smudging each one into the next. Start with the darkest and end with the lightest

I'd also use a charcoal black or dark brown eyeliner and smudge that to finish the effect off nicely.

Moving now to your hair. Highlighting at home is notoriously troublesome, as you need 3 pairs of hands!

First, check the instructions on the box of the hair dye you have chosen.  See if your hair needs to be wet or dry and mix the dye.

I usually deviate from the instructions here and transfer the mixed dye into a little dish.

Next, separate off a small section of hair that is to be low/high-lighted and pop some tin foil under it, to keep it off the rest of the hair.

Then, using an appropriate brush, brush on the dye to that section of hair, carefully getting as close to the root as you can. Then fold the tin foil around the section tightly enough so that it remains firmly in place.

When you have done this on as many sections as you'd like, leave for the recommended development time and then wash off as per the instructions.

If it were me though, I would probably bite the bullet and go to a hairdressers for this one because of it being so fiddly.  A lot of hairdressers have training days, where students, who are supervised, practice color treatments and highlighting.  This is much cheaper than the usual hairdressers' rates and might be worth the money in this case.

The look you are suggesting sounds absolutely lovely, especially with your big brown eyes.

I hope that's helped,

Take care, Claire
