Best Lipstick Shades for Dark Lips & Medium Skin Tone

Question
Hi,
My upper lip is a thin though my lower lip is in proper shape. Both upper and lower lips are dark! My skin color is medium fair (I am fair in Indian standards). Can you suggest a lipstick color that would suit me?
When I try applying colors like orange, since my lips are dark, it doesn't go good at all. I like to use light colors like baby pink but most of the times it doesn't work on me. What do you suggest?

Thanks in advance.

Answer
Hi there, thanks for your question.

Lipstick is a very personal thing and, although skin, hair and eye colour play a part in finding just the write tone, sometimes what we wear also brings out different colours in our complexion.

Sometimes people with darker hair and eyes suit red, darker red and plumb colours.  Using a lip pencil a couple of shades either lighter or darker than the lipstick can also help to provide definition.

The baby pink that you mention may be less successful if as you say, you have paler skin as your lips may need contrast to really stand out and provide the look you are after.

There are also lip plumpers on the market, which irritate the skin of the lips enough to make them fill out. This might be enough for you if you feel that your upper lip is a little thinner than your lower lip.  At the more extreme end, you can have injectable fillers, collagen for example, which lasts between 6 months to a year and fills out the lips.  A lot of film stars have this done.  It works better on some than others and must always be carried out by a qualified cosmetic practitioner.

My advice would be to buy a pallet of colours you think would suit your skin colouring and your personality and have a night in in front of the mirror, trying out different looks to see which you like the best.

Remember lip-gloss can also change how a colour appears and can offer a different style for a special occasion.

I hope that helps,

Take care and have great fun finding your new look,
