Prozac and Pregnancy: Understanding Dependence and Safe Weaning

If you do a quick search on the world wide web, I'm sure you will find a plethora of information on a natural alternative to Prozac. When Pregnancy comes into the picture and now we are trying to wean ourselves off of it, any option would be satisfactory. However, this is easier said than done, Prozac dependancy can be a serious hurdle to overcome. You may even be addicted to it in some sense. The best advice I an give you is to consult your doctor and develop a plan to slowly come off of the drug instead of cold turkey.

There once was a movie called the Princess Bride. In it the hero had challenged his enemy to a test of wits. He had placed 2 cups of wine in front of him and his enemy. One of the cups had poison in it. It was now up to his enemy to figure out which cup had the poison and he was to choose first which cup he would drink, and then they would dring the cups in unison. The loser would die, obviously.

So before he drank the cup, the enemy goes into this complex intellectual deductionning process, trying to figure out which cup had the poison in it. Finally, he choses one of the cups and they both drink. While the poison was starting to enter into his body our hero informs his enemy that he had placed poison in both cups, and that he was immune to the poison because he had accustomed himself through conditioning to be unaffected by the drug.

In our case both sides are true. On one hand you have conditioned your body to the drug thereby becoming dependant to it. And on the other hand maybe we can find the solution to our problem in its opposite. What I mean to say is if you've conditionned yourself to the drug, you can un-condition yourself from the prozac. It may take time, but by slowly reducing the dosage and daily intake just a little, thereby tricking your body into not alarming itself from the "lack" of the prozac during your pregnancy, you may actually beat the dependancy.

Ultimately its hard work, there is no magical pill that will make it go away, but your consistent effort at trying to make it work and reduce your dependancy on prozac during your pregnancy can do wonders. You are strong, and you have it in you to succeed. G-d does not demand more than you can handle, and if this is your challenge, then you have it in you to overcome.
