Expert Guide: How to Hand Wash Drinking Glasses for Spotless Results

Glasses are one of the hardest things in the kitchen to clean properly. Dishwashers are the most effective with making sure that the glasses are sterilized properly, but most dishwasher detergents leave beautiful glasses with spots and film. Hand-washing the glasses ensures that they will be spot free, but does not always promised disinfected glassware. Learn how to efficiently and effectively clean and disinfect the glassware in your kitchen.

  • Wash the inside. With warm soapy water and a soft spongy bottle brush, wash the inside of the glass. Move the brush around the bottom of the glass in a circular motion.

  • Wash the rim. With a soapy dish towel, wash the rim of the glass. This is a crucial part in the disinfecting of the glass. Carefully wash away any lipstick marks that may have been left on the glass's edge.

  • Rinse well. Rinse the glass inside and out with hot water. Hot water will remove the soap as well as the residue the soap may leave behind.

  • Rinse in bleach. Fill a tub or sink with bleach water. For bleach to be effective, the water should be room temperature. Allow glasses to soak for a few minutes in the bleach water.

  • Allow glasses to dry turned upside down. With the glasses being upside down, the water will drip out of the glass and onto the towel or dish drainer below.
