Retail chains and specialty boutiques sell fragrant body creams at extravagant prices. Many of these creams contain the same natural ingredients you can use to make your own body creams at a fraction of the price. Save even more money by reusing a 4-oz. jar from a previously purchased body cream to store your homemade cream. Supplies to create your own body cream can be purchased at natural herb and ingredient stores, grocery and craft stores. Make a lavender body cream in about an hour.
Pour the almond oil into a glass measuring container. Cut the beeswax block into small squares. Put the beeswax into the glass measuring container with the almond oil. According to Lavenora, beeswax is a natural skin softener and thickens the body cream. Purchase beeswax at natural food and craft stores.
Pour the water and borax into another glass measuring container. Lavenora says borax is used as a water softener. There is no alternative to borax. When beeswax and borax combine, the result is a cream that spreads easily and is soft to the skin. Borax can be purchased at grocery stores.
Fill the pan a quarter full with water. Put the pan on the stove and set the burner on low. Carefully place the glass containers into the pan and allow the water to simmer. If the glass containers are too big to fit into one pan, use a separate pan for one of the glass containers.
Use a wood stick to stir the oil and wax in one glass container. Use another wood stick to stir the water and borax in the other glass container. Stir and simmer until the wax has melted into the oil and the borax powder has dissolved in the water.
Remove the containers from the water with potholders. Dry the outside of the glass containers with a towel.
Use a mixer to mix the water solution in the glass container. As you mix, pour in the Xanthan gum. Mix the solution for about two minutes until the water begins to bubble and thicken. Xanthan gum is created from corn sugar and can be purchased at natural food stores.
Mix the oil and wax solution with the mixer as you pour the thickening water solution into the oil/wax glass container. Mix the solution for about 15 minutes with the mixer set on high until the mixture begins to form a white cream.
Use the essential oil dropper to add about 25 drops of lavender oil to the thickening cream. Continue mixing for about two minutes.
Spoon the cream into the clean jar and put on the lid.
