Understanding and Utilizing Nail Rust: Causes & Creative Uses

Nails are an important building and construction material. They come in a wide range of sizes, lengths and composition. Today most nails are made from steel, but iron, aluminum and copper nails also exist. Because a nail is made of metal it rusts under certain conditions. While rusted nails pose a hazard as a building material, they can be useful for art and crafts projects. They offer a unique look for creative projects.

  • Use sandpaper to scrub off the rust-proof coating.

  • Put on rubber gloves and open a window in the work area. Ventilation is important as a safety precaution.

  • Pour equal parts of vinegar and bleach into a glass bowl. Use either white vinegar or apple cider vinegar.

  • Submerge the nails in the solution.

  • Leave nails in solution for 30 minutes. For more advanced rust, leave in for one hour.

  • Remove nails from solution and place on paper towel to dry.

  • Repeat steps three to six times until you get the desired level of rust on the nail.
