Vinegar is a safe, organic, non-toxic way to kill mold forming in common areas of your home. Some of the most common areas of your home where you will want to avoid using harsh chemicals to try and stop and kill mold growth are in the kitchen and bathroom. For those areas with high traffic and lots of moisture, vinegar works great to keep down mold and keep everyone using those areas healthy.
Go to the supermarket and purchase some Heinz Distilled White Vinegar. The sell different sizes, but I get the biggest size I can find at Costco for house cleaning.
Put on your latex or rubber gloves to avoid direct contact of the white vinegar to your skin. It can cause irritation and is best to avoid direct prolonged contact.
Next, get a plastic spray bottle, and pour the White Vinegar into the plastic spray bottle. Use a small food funnel if you need to avoid overspill.
When cleaning your bathroom, kitchen, or basement walls, spray a mist of the white vinegar onto the moldy area that you wish you clean. You want to keep the spray bottle set to Mist or Spray instead of a harsh stream of solution.
Take your nylon brush and work the vinegar into the moldy area. This works great around tubs, for grout, and on appliances. Doing this will work the vinegar into the mold helping it to break up the mold and kill it. Scrub gently, and always use a soft nylon brush to avoid damaging your tub or appliance surfaces. If you are scrubbing concrete walls - it is still best to use a nylon brush, but you can use a stiffer bristle if required.
Let this solution that you have scrubbed into the mold sit for about 5 minutes or so to help break it up. Come back and spray another application of white vinegar over the mold and wipe it away with your cleaning cloth or sponge.
