Leveraging Experience: How to Land Your Dream Job
All of us have seen job ads in the newspaper and EXPERIENCE is the main thing they are looking for. The question some people ask is how I will get experience if no one wants to hire me and they are right. If you are in college or in high school and you have already chosen your career then you have to get on the job experience.
I know that in college money is tight and on your vacation time you might be spending it working for your tuition. However take a week or two off and call around all the places you can think of that could use someone in your field. Try and speak with someone in their human resources department or someone in charge. Explain to them that you do not want ANY MONEY and you have your resume and any relevant documents on hand. All you do want is to work there for a short time to learn all you can and help you in your future. I am pretty sure at least one place will give you the opportunity. Volunteering you services for a short time can sometime lead to a job if your work is impressive.Although experience in the field that you are applying for is desired, experience on the whole is an asset. When it comes to work there is a set of skills called "Transferable Skills" which you can use on any job. Being on time is something all companies look for and if you can show you were on time in the past, this will help you in your job hunt.
Honesty is also very important to any business and if you are a person who can be trusted, that will go a long way. Remember if you are labeled as a thief just once, that can follow you throughout your entire career. In addition to honesty, your attitude is very important to employers. If you are on a job now or when you get one in the future make sure to treat employees, bosses and customers with respect. I know that some of these people can really piss you off but it is in your best interest to be civil to them while you are at work. You always want to leave behind a record where if a potential employers calls your old job you will get a decent review. A potential boss would like to know that you work well with others, but can also work without supervision.
