Do you have a teen that is showing signs of anxiety? If so, what do you do about it? It is an unfortunate but very real fact that stress and anxiety in teens is a common problem. As busy working parents, these kinds of issues may appear and leave us feeling overwhelmed about how to help our child. Addressing children with anxiety is not easy but a necessary step in dealing with what can be a lifelong battle. Without help, childhood anxiety can often follow your child into adulthood and cause other problems.
As adults we all know what anxiety looks like. If you have not experienced it first hand, we all know people that have struggled with it. It is defined as worry or uneasiness about what may happen. For those that suffer from anxiety, it looks like the sheer panic felt when doing certain things, when thinking about what the future holds.
What To Do: There are a few strategies you can employ as a parent to try and deal with this anxiety:
(1) Don't dismiss feelings- If you child is showing signs of stress or anxiety, telling her not to worry about it is not helpful. Let her know it is okay to feel bad about something and encourage her to share her emotions.
(2) Outside play - Exercise and sunshine can boost anyones mood so take the problem outside for a quick game of soccer or a hike. If these simple tips don't seem to help, you need to consider the next step. Consider this amazing series created just for parents: Overcoming Child Anxiety. It is an audio and handbook series created by Rich Presta and Dr. Cheryl Lane, a Clinical Psychologist. Mr. Presta is a person that has dealt with his own anxiety (as a child and adult) who has paired with a Clinical Psychologist to develop a program to help parents eliminate anxiety in their children. The book and audio work together to help parents help their kids. Each section of the course ends with a series of questions and exercises that parents do with their kids. The end result is to help these anxious children overcome child anxiety and not simply cope with it.
(3) Stick with routine- As much as possible, avoid messing up your child's routine. Kids need to know what to expect. Stay with regular mealtime, bedtime, and avoid overscheduling. If these simple tips don't seem to help, you need to consider the next step.
