Staying Connected: Tips for Parents When Traveling or Working Remotely

Let your kids help you pack: Again, if working motherhood requires that you travel, one of the best ways to feel connected when planning a trip is to ask your children to help you pack. If you are not traveling, but are still "separated" by your office job, consider letting your kids help you get ready for work.

Having your little ones help pack up your computer, stack your file folders, or even help prepare your lunch will go a long way towards making them feel included in your work life.

Another tip for helping them feel included is to choose a "special something" of theirs that you can bring with you and something they can hold of yours. When I see the friendship bracelet my daughter made for me, I feel much more connected, so I wear it when I travel.

Leave surprise notes: If an important meeting is keeping you from your daughter's school play or an out-of-town trip means you'll miss your son's soccer game, slip them a surprise note so that your child will know you're thinking of them.

I have been known to put an "I miss you already" note in the girls' morning cereal box, or a smiley face note under Parkers pillow. My daughters' school lunches are also great opportunities for something silly and fun.

My kids love finding these notes and I love hearing their excitement and happiness when those notes are discovered. This little step can actually make your absence viewed in a positive light: you are making memories while at the same time showing your kids that they're always on your mind.

Arrange a special outing with Dad: Eating out! Ice skating! Going to see a movie! Sometimes I think my kids like it when I go away because Scott will often try to do something a little special or different that is just for them.

Create something that happens only when you are away--like a living room sleepover or watching a movie with snacks after dinner. Moments like these can create lasting memories that your children will cherish for many years.

I know it is not always easy to do since often your spouse or partner is also working full-time. This tip is not intended to create additional stress or expectation--just an opportunity to make the time special.

Get engrossed in your work: Haven't we all heard the saying that you are most productive when you are most busy? You have made the decision to work, so now--get busy!

In the early years, my best days were the ones when I was slammed with work. I would feel productive and the hours would just fly by. When the day's end came, I was ready to take a break and was truly looking forward to seeing my kids.

Take these hours spent away from your children and put them to good use. Get productive, get promoted, and feel good about your contributions outside of mothering. Getting engrossed in work allows you to get away from focusing on your fears. This, in turn, helps reduce your guilt and anxiety, while also helping you feel more empowered and confident.
