Prisoner-Staff Relationships: Risks, Ethics, and Consequences
Finding love in prison is a rare and wonderful thing. The probability is very low and it's the least of all places you'd expect to find love. But is it a good thing? Tragedy struck at New York a few days ago as two inmates convicted with murder escaped from the Clinton Correctional Facility spreading chaos and pandemonium among the civilians who lived nearby. The reason? Love. Or more specifically a prison staff was blinded by love. With this case in mind should it be implemented much like office love, that relationships in prison facilities be a no-no? Or would that violate basic human needs and emotion. Let's get to the nitty-gritty.
Tricked By Love
Joyce Mitchell, the prison employee at the Clinton Correctional Facility, really thought it was love. A married 51-year-old woman claimed in court that Richard Matt one of the prisoners made her feel "special". Can we say she was tricked or manipulated? Probably so. Not dehumanizing prisoners but there is a high probability that these criminals are really skilled in deceiving people to get what they want. By observing and pinpointing their targets weaknesses, they then exploit the person until they get what they want and leave them. And sadly poor Joyce was struck and ultimately made an error. This is why office relationships a prohibited in corporate settings, if one employee is in love and if something happens that will cause that said feeling to end, it could cost the whole performance of the team and the outputs of the company, quickly moving to micro and macro in weeks. Time is wasted, the effort is wasted and money is wasted. Love like in any other workplace is counterproductive.
Scenarios Reversed
What if the prisoner was the victim? This was the case at Clements Unit in Texas, where former prison nurse Domenic Hildago used his position to manipulate victims to get what he wanted: sex. First he'll pretend to give them the medicine that they need for free out of his good will. Then after several weeks of this repeated scenario he'll ask for sex and when inmates hesitate, he'll play the blame game and flip the situation out, a smart tactic of manipulation used at inmates. Prisoner then in return have no choice but to do the sexual favors. And it goes beyond that for prisons in Texas, they use blackmail and pretend they'll harm their children even withholding Texas jail calls to keep them of talking to their families. Which brings us to the point that still prison employees hold control of the situation, they are in the right and higher position to steer things to what is right. Employee and Inmate relationships must be abolished as it gives way to further bullying and manipulation of prisoners.
