Understanding Assisted Living: Benefits & What to Expect

Are you thinking about moving to assisted living facilities? Or perhaps you're looking in to assisted living communities for a senior member of your family? That's a very good idea, as assisted living can provide excellent facilities for a senior as they age and find it more challenging to go about the day to day activities of living.   Assisted living is very different from the nursing homes of the past, as these communities are geared to a wide range of facilities that can assist a senior at any stage of life. In fact, assisted living communities often have residences with no special facilities at all, so that a senior can move in to the community while they are living a self-sufficient life. This lets a senior get used to the new neighborhood and meet other members who have chosen senior living for this period of their lives.   One of the great benefits of assisted living communities is that they're designed to allow a senior to increase the services that they use as they wish. Thus, a new residence may choose this senior living option simply because they have friends in one of these communities or because it is senior living and they wish to live near many of their peers. They may not need any of the services that are available. Over time, they may start to use some of the services as a convenience, and eventually some of those services may become necessary. Whatever level of services are provided to the residents, the emphasis is always on assisted living, so that each senior has as much independence as possible.   In the early days of residence in assisted living communities, a senior may live completely independently. Over time, they may tire of cooking all their meals and make use of the community dining facilities. Community dining is available for all who cannot cook, but it can provide a nice break from the effort for those who can cook, as well as a chance to catch up with neighbors. Other services may appeal as the months go by as well. Assisted living communites often have concierge and travel services available to residents, for both local travel and more extensive travel. While a new resident may be able to drive and thus not need these services, in time it may be nice to be able to use the facilities driver for a quick trip around town.   As the years go by, assisted living facilities really excel at providing a senior with the services that may be necessary in our later years. All assisted living communities have apartments that can handle the needs of a senior with an advanced medical condition, and it's easier to move into one of these apartments if it's just down the hall or in the next building. This isn't as big a change in living as it would be if moving in to these "complete care" facilities for the first time from outside, so the transition to greater care is smoother.
