Discover the Benefits of Assisted Living for Seniors
Assisted living facilities offer seniors more than just comfortable assisted living. Assisted living can change the life of a senior and take the fear out of senior housing. A senior living alone, as opposed to in an assisted living facility, is more at risk of having an unassisted injury, declining care of personal hygiene or health, and difficulty keeping up with the day to day housework necessary to maintain clean and comfortable living. Assisted living facilities offer services that can help care for seniors while simultaneously providing healthy and happy communities for a senior to enjoy. Assisted living communities are great and searching for the perfect assisted living community can be easy!
Â
When first shopping for an assisted living facility it is important to know that assisted living communities are extremely diverse and obtaining info from the top care communities in your area is a great place to start. Contact friends or family who may be able to recommend assisted living care facilities and ask questions that are important to you and your senior. No two communities are alike, and doing homework to find the best assisted living facility with services that you and your senior would prefer will make a big difference.
Â
When browsing assisted living facilities it is nice to let your fingers do some of the walking and look for info online. Checking assisted living communities and their websites may offer a look into what services are provided and the types of housing that the communities offer. While online research is a great starting point, never agree to an assisted living facility without touring the housing first! Make an appointment (or don't- if they allow drop-ins!) and do a search for yourself.
Â
The first thing you will likely notice with assisted living communities is their appearance. While appearance of the exterior of a housing facility can be aesthetically pleasing (or not), it is wise never to judge assisted living by its appearance! Is parking adequate for the needs of residents, visitors, and medical staff? Does the building appear well maintained? Those kinds of questions are important. While pretty stucco is appealing, it should not be the priority. Instead, it is vital to remember that when arriving at a potential assisted living center, one would do well to "follow your nose!" While pretty flowers and grounds are appealing, they do not offer clues to actual sanitation of the facility, but your sense of smell will give clues- so be sure to keep your nose open!
Â
Assisted living communities have a large range of care and services options. While one senior may need very little care but would like housing that is cleaned weekly, another senior may enjoy medical care services and more active senior living. Look at the assisted living community calendar or schedule and see what types of activities or services are offered (also, pay attention to additional costs that may be necessary for them!). If an assisted living center does not have the types of care and services you and your senior are looking for- do not give up, just keep shopping!
