Natural Dengue Remedies: Effective Home Care & Recovery Tips

Best Home Remedies For Dengue Fever:

1. Papaya Leaf:

Papaya leaf has recently gained a lot of popularity in the medical circle following some conclusive researches that show its benefits in treating dengue. The papaya leaf remedy for dengue to increase the blood platelets count have shown positive results (1). You can follow these easy steps to treat a dengue patient:

  • Pluck a few fresh papaya leaves.
  • Clean them well in warm, saline water.
  • Grind it well in a grinder with some water.
  • Add some sugar to the syrup prepared for easy administration, since the syrup is bitter in taste.
  • Administer the extract twice a day for five days.

2. Neem:

The crude aqueous extract of Neem leaves can inhibit the replication of dengue virus (2). The Neem extract has been found to have anti-viral properties to treat dengue. In order to use neem extracts, here are a few steps you can follow:

  • Get some fresh Neem leaves. In India, Neem trees are pretty common and you can find a tree easily.
  • Wash them well.
  • Chew them raw to get best results.
  • If you find them too bitter to eat, you can blanch them in some water.
  • After blanching, mash the leaves a little and let them steep.
  • After an hour when the water has cooled down, strain and discard the leaves.
  • Drink this concoction twice a day.

3. Coriander Leaf:

Coriander leaf is yet another herb that has medicinal properties, especially those that come in handy for dengue patients.

  • Blend a bunch of coriander leaves with water and drink the extract in tonic form.
  • You can also chew the raw coriander leaves after cleaning. As it is a fragrant herb, there shouldn’t be a problem.
  • You can also grind the leaves and extract the juice. 10 ml of fresh coriander juice, twice a day can be effective.

4. Vitamin C:

Vitamin C has been known to be an essential nutrient to stimulate the immune system (3). As an immunity-booster, it can help the body fight the virus. The dengue patients are thus advised to consume vegetables and fruits rich in Vitamin C. We can get our dose of vitamin C from any of these food groups:

  • Citrus fruits (oranges, lemons, lime, pomelo, grapefruit, Clementine)
  • Berries (strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, blueberries)
  • Sprouts (Broccoli, Brussel sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower)
  • Peppers (yellow bell peppers, red peppers, green peppers)
  • Others (Papaya, mango, pineapple, cantaloupe melon, tomatoes, kiwi)

5. Tulsi:

The medicinal benefits of Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum) or holy basil are not hidden from the world. It has been recommended in Ayurvedic medicine for the treatment of dengue fever owing to its immune-boosting properties. It is antibacterial, antimicrobial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory (4). For all these properties, it is one of the best herbal remedies for dengue fever.

  • You can simply chew raw tulsi leaves every day.
  • You can brew a tulsi tea. Get a few tulsi leaves and toss them into boiling water with tea leaves. Let them seep until the water is warm. Strain away the leaves and drink the portion.
  • Tulsi capsules are also found at herbal medicine stores. You can even take these instead of the leaves as well.

6. Cassia Root:

Cassia root has high medicinal value. In case of dengue fever, cassia root tonics are extremely beneficial (5).

  • Dry the cassia roots and crush them into crumbs or even powder.
  • Take some water in a large pot and bring it to boil.
  • Once the water has come to a rolling boil, pour the root crumbs in it.
  • Let it cool down.
  • Simmer the roots for fifteen minutes and take it off the heat.
  • Let it infuse in the water overnight.
  • When needed, pour out some of the concoction over a sieve to retrain bits of the root.

7. Fenugreek Leaves:

Fenugreek leaves also have ample healing properties, much like the rest of the members of the herb family (6). In fact, fenugreek has considerable antiviral properties. To make a fenugreek concoction, follow these simple steps:

  • Pluck a few fenugreek leaves and crush them in a mortar and pestle.
  • Take some water and bring it to boil.
  • Turn off the heat and drop the fenugreek leaves along with some mild tea leaves into the hot water.
  • Cover the pot and let the leaves steep for a while.
  • Once cool, strain the tea and discard the leaves.
  • Drink this tea every day.

8. Green Leafy Vegetables:

Green leafy vegetables are chock full of nutrition and whether you have dengue or not, eating lots of these vegetables will always be beneficial for your body. It has to be kept in mind that when are suffering from dengue, it is best to avoid solid food. So you can make a smoothie with these vegetables.

  • Wilt some of the green vegetables like spinach, kale and collard greens in warm water. Now chuck these in the blender with a couple of ice cubes and blitz it up. Serve this chilled.
  • You can also combine a fruit juice with the green leaves during blending. Orange kale smoothie would definitely provide your fatigue body some relief.

9. Proteins:

While you should avoid solid food, especially spicy food when you’re down with dengue, you also need proper nutrition to get back in good health. So, easily digestible proteins like legumes and pulses are a good option. Have some lentil soup or some egg-drop soup. You can also have homemade chicken soup with shredded bits of chicken.

10. Fluids:

Dengue tends to dehydrate your body a lot (7). So you need to keep your body’s electrolyte level in check. Drink plenty of water with mineral replenishing powder, or simply add sugar and salt to the water. You can make your own homemade electrolyte or drink fruit juice.
