Atkins & South Beach Diets: Interactions with Diuretics & Beta-Blockers
QuestionThe Atkins diet is effected by diurectisc and beta-blockers. Is the same thing true of the South Beach diet?
AnswerPortia,
Normally, in a healthy person, the Atkins diet is not affected by beta blockers. With very high doses of certain types of diuretics, there can be problems with both Atkins and South Beach. Most of the time, there's no problem with drug/diet interaction. However, sometimes people take beta blockers and diuretics because they already have kidney failure, and neither Atkins nor South Beach is appropriate for people with kidney or liver failure. These people must follow special medical diets, and can't use any conventional weight-loss diet plans.
