Understanding Malnutrition in Children in Africa: A Medical Perspective

My question is, in Africa why is it that a child that is skin and bones but will have a stomach the size of a balloon?

I can't recall the medical term, but I believe this happens because of the malnutrition and a lack of protein. I would say ask another expert on this site such as one that is a doctor or registered dietician. sorry I couldn't be of more help.
